Reticular Activating System
Series of specialized nuclei in the core of brainstem.
Four groups of nuclei
1. Glutaminergic: activate glutamate
2. Monoaminergic: activate adrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine
3. Cholinergic: activate acetylcholine
4. Autonomic nuclei: innervate viscera
Functions of the Reticular Activating System include: Cortical arousal, Cortical wakefulness, and Consciousness
Damage to the RAS can lead to conditions, like a coma
