Emotional Intelligence and the SLP/Audiologist

Emotional Intelligence is the abilities to:

  • perceive, appraise, and express emotions accurately
  • access and evoke emotions when they facilitate cognition
  • comprehend emotional messages and to make sure of emotional information
  • regulate one's own emotions to promote growth and well-being

Clinicians need to perceive, appraise, and understand the emotions of their clients. Clinicians also must respond on an emotional level to client's emotional intents. A lack of this kind of response leads to client frustration of "not being heard." Clinicians must be aware of their own emotions, and must regulate their own emotions so as not to "leak out" on their clients
