Theories of Emotion

1. James-Lange Theory: physiological responses (e.g., trembling) to external stimuli lead to emotional experience. For example, if you see a wild bear, you might begin to tremble and then experience fear. The viscera and sensory systems are at the heart of this theory.

2. Cannon-Bard Theory: posits that external stimuli simultaneously triggers a physiological response and emotional experience. If you see a wild bear, then you will begin trembling and have fear at once. The thalamus, cortex, and hypothalamus are at the center of this theory.

3. Two-Factor Theory: emotion is based on two factors: a physiological state and the interpretation of the state. The autonomic nervous system at heart of this theory.
