Neurology of Silent Aspiration

Aspiration occurs when the bolus penetrates the airway below the level of the vocal cords. About 1/3 of dysphasic patients aspirate without any signs. This could also occur to patients who do not have any deficits. Neurological damage can suppress the cough response system.
