Peripheral Vestibular System

Semicircular Canals

Three fluid-filled canals that correspond to our 3D world: 1. Anterior canal: coronal plane of space, 2. Posterior canal: sagittal plane of space, 3. Horizontal canal: transverse plane of space

Peripheral Vestibular System

Ampulla

Each semicircular canal has a swelling called an ampulla•Inside each ampulla is structure known as the crista ampullares. Crista ampullares has hair cells similar to cochlea. These hair cells sensitive to body movements in the different planes of space.

Generation of Neural Impulse

Two types of hair cells in crista ampullares: 1.Stereocilia 2. Kinocilia. When body movement, fluids move in semi-circular canals. If stereocilia bend toward kinocilia, hair cell depolarizes.
