Apraxia of Speech
- Motor speech disorders include both dysarthria and apraxia of speech (AOS)
- Apraxia of speech is a motor planning and programming disorder
- Hallmark characteristic = searching/groping for articulatory placement
- Other symptoms include: random substitutions, errors in articulatory placement
Neurological damage leading to AOS can occur in the following:
- Broca’s area (BA 44, 45)
- Supplementary motor area (BA 6)
- Insula (insular cortex)
- Basal ganglia
