- Acquired = caused by stroke, brain injury, etc.

–Multimodality = problem in multiple language modalities (listening, speaking, reading, writing)

–Language = the symbolic code we use to communicate

–Disorder = language system does not function as it should

Symptoms of Aphasia:

Expressive language problems include: 

–Agrammatism

–Anomia: word-finding deficit 

–Jargon ("word salad") 

–Neologism: non-real words 

–Paraphasia (Literal & Verbal): errors in spoken words

–Verbal stereotypes

–Agraphia: inability to write letters or words 

Receptive Language problems include:

–Auditory comprehension loss

–Alexia: acquired reading impairment
